Louis Fine<\/strong>\u00a0(November 26, 1914 \u2013 July 24, 1971) was an American\u00a0comic book\u00a0artist\u00a0known for his work during the 1940s\u00a0Golden Age of comic books, where his draftsmanship became an influential model to a generation of fellow comics artists.<\/p>

At about age two or in his early teens,\u00a0Fine’s left leg became crippled by polio.\u00a0Developing a talent for art, and influenced by such commercial illustrators and other artists as\u00a0Dean Cornwell,\u00a0Heinrich Kley, and\u00a0J.C. Leyendecker,\u00a0Fine went on to study at Manhattan’s\u00a0Grand Central Art School\u00a0and\u00a0Brooklyn’s\u00a0Pratt Institute. In 1938, Fine, like many other comics artists of the time, found work at\u00a0Eisner & Iger, a prominent “packager” that supplied complete comic books to\u00a0publishers\u00a0testing the emerging\u00a0medium. Fine’s first published comics art was the strip “Wilton of the West” in\u00a0Fiction House’s\u00a0Jumbo Comics<\/em>\u00a0#4 (Dec. 1938), signed with the house\u00a0pen name\u00a0Fred Sande (which strip originator\u00a0Jack Kirby\u00a0had used in previous issues). Other early\u00a0pseudonyms\u00a0Fine employed (reflecting the fledgling Eisner & Iger’s attempts to convince publishers they had a large stable of artists) were Curt Davis and Basil Berold. Eisner would later say, “I had respect for his towering kind of draftsmanship. He was the epitome of the honest draftsman. No fakery, no razzle-dazzle \u2014 very direct, very honest in his approach”.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

Fine went on to do exquisite and acclaimed work for\u00a0Fox Feature Syndicate, where he supplied the cover of 1939’s\u00a0Blue Beetle<\/em>\u00a0#1 and drew such features as “The Flame” in\u00a0Wonderworld Comics<\/em>\u00a0and the later eponymous series. For publisher\u00a0Everett M. “Busy” Arnold’s\u00a0Quality Comics, he drew features including “The Black Condor” (initially under the pseudonym Kenneth Lewis) in\u00a0Crack Comics<\/em>; “Doll Man” (under the pseudonym William Erwin Maxwell) in\u00a0Feature Comics<\/em>; “The Ray” (initially under the jokey pseudonym E. Lectron) in\u00a0Smash Comics<\/em>; “Uncle Sam” (for which Eisner & Iger co-founder\u00a0Will Eisner<\/a>\u00a0received credit) in\u00a0National Comics<\/em>; and “Stormy Foster” in\u00a0Hit Comics<\/em>. Fine, along with\u00a0Plastic Man<\/em>\u00a0creator\u00a0Jack Cole<\/a>, was a\u00a0ghost artist\u00a0on Will Eisner’s celebrated Sunday-supplement\u00a0newspaper\u00a0comic book\u00a0The Spirit<\/em>\u00a0during Eisner’s\u00a0World War II\u00a0military service,\u00a0Fine inking over Cole’s pencil work. Some of these were reprinted in Quality’s\u00a0Police Comics<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0The Spirit<\/em>\u00a0comic book, where Fine’s work continued to appear through 1949, five years after Fine had left comics.<\/p>

Joe Simon, an artist and the first editor of\u00a0Marvel Comics, called Fine his “favorite artist…. He was also Jack Kirby’s favorite artist. I know that Jack was a fan of and greatly influenced by Fine’s work”. Fine is credited with being the first comics artist to draw a line of saliva running between the upper and lower teeth in a character’s open mouth (a device commonly associated with Kirby)<\/p>

Leaving comic books in 1944, Fine segued into\u00a0newspapers\u00a0by drawing Sunday\u00a0advertising\u00a0comics. Starting out at\u00a0Johnstone and Cushing, he formed his own company with Don Komisarov, whom he had met doing\u00a0The Throp Family<\/em>\u00a0for\u00a0Liberty<\/em>\u00a0in 1946. He had many accounts, but his two most enduring were the series he did for\u00a0Philip Morris USA\u00a0and the\u00a0Sam Spade\u00a0strip for\u00a0Wildroot Cream-Oil.<\/p>

He later drew the\u00a0comic strips\u00a0Taylor Woe<\/em>\u00a0(1949),\u00a0Adam Ames<\/em>\u00a0(1959) and\u00a0Peter Scratch<\/em>\u00a0(1965). In a single return to comic books, he contributed to a\u00a0toy\u00a0company’s custom one-shot,\u00a0Wham-O\u00a0Giant Comics<\/em>\u00a0(1967), illustrating a two-page story, “The Man From Aeons”, starring a\u00a0prehistoric\u00a0man who, though named “Tor”, was not the\u00a0same-name caveman character\u00a0created in the 1950s by\u00a0Joe Kubert<\/a>.<\/p>

Fine also worked on the strip\u00a0Space Conquerors<\/em>\u00a0in the magazine\u00a0Boys’ Life<\/em>\u00a0from the late 1960s until his death. He and writer\u00a0Gill Fox, whom he had met during his time with Eisner & Iger and remained in contact with, were developing new comic strips when Fine was found dead of a\u00a0heart attack\u00a0in his studio.<\/p>

Lou Fine was one of those rare guys (rare for the Golden age of comics, at least) that could really draw<\/em>.\u00a0 And draw well<\/em>. His anatomy is unmistakable, he studied storytelling under the master Will Eisner, and his compositions were much more thought out or, maybe, just plain better than anyone else\u2019s.<\/p>
