Featured Artist \u2013 George Klein<\/p>

This one is gong to be slightly different from our usual FA. It\u2019s different because this is bit more personal. See, on the phone, the other day James Robinson<\/a> (humblebragmuch?) and I were talking about future projects together and he was very complimentary about my inkwork and he compared me to George Klein. In all honesty, I did not know who he was talking about. Which upset me. Why? Because, as you can see with most of our blogposts here we have a fondness for what came before us. We are keenly aware of the shoulders we stand on and have great respect for them.<\/p>

So, NOT knowing, quickly, someone who came before me felt\u2026wrong.<\/p>

So down I dove down the rabbit hole I went and WOW was I surprised.<\/p>

George D. Klein<\/strong> (c. 1915\u00a0or 1920\u00a0\u2013\u00a01969) was an American\u00a0comic book\u00a0artist and\u00a0cartoonist\u00a0whose career stretched from the 1930s and 1940s’\u00a0Golden Age of comic books\u00a0until his death in 1969. He was best known as an\u00a0inker\u00a0for\u00a0DC Comics, where he was an integral part of the\u00a0Superman\u00a0family of titles from 1955 to 1968, and for\u00a0Marvel Comics, where he was the generally recognized, uncredited inker on\u00a0Jack Kirby’s\u00a0pencil art\u00a0for the landmark comic book\u00a0The Fantastic Four<\/em>\u00a0#1.<\/p>

See what I mean? And he didn\u2019t stop there.<\/p>

Klein attended the\u00a0Kansas City Art Institute\u00a0and New York’s\u00a0Cartoonists and Illustrators School. At Timely Comics, Klein was both a penciler and an inker, initially on\u00a0superhero\u00a0features. He was among the pencilers of the super-speedster the\u00a0Whizzer, in\u00a0All Winners Comics<\/em>\u00a0#8\u20139 (Spring-Summer 1943). He had inked that early Marvel character, over\u00a0Mike Sekowsky’s pencils, as early as\u00a0All Winners<\/em>\u00a0#3. Klein also worked on the characters\u00a0Miss America\u00a0(inking the premiere issue in 1944), the\u00a0Young Allies, the\u00a0Black Marvel, the Golden Age\u00a0Black Widow, the Defender, and, under the pseudonym Nick Karlton, the\u00a0Challenger. Klein found himself more utilized, however, in what was called Timely’s “animator” bullpen, which created such movie tie-in and original\u00a0talking animal\u00a0comics as\u00a0Mighty Mouse<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0Animated Funny Comic-Tunes<\/em>.<\/p>

Because he was on staff, Klein frequently did not sign his artwork \u2013 a typical though not ironclad industry habit at the time \u2013 making it difficult to assess his Golden Age output.<\/p>

In the post-war era, Klein drew for a variety of publishers. For\u00a0DC Comics, nearly ten years before teaming with penciler\u00a0Curt Swan\u00a0on various Superman titles, Klein inked him on a “Boy Commandos” story in\u00a0World’s Finest Comics<\/em>\u00a0#21 (March\u2013April 1946).<\/p>

I went and picked a few of those issues, because we are HUGE fans of Curt Swan\u2019s. Honestly, for the time, they were beautifully illustrated. As much as I love Al Williamson and his inking over Curt, George\u2019s work was slicker, cleaner and simply stunning to read.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

There is a wonderful article about George over here<\/a>\u00a0 that I\u2019m going to pull a few quotes from.<\/p>

\u201cKlein set new standards for his craft with his razor-crisp brushline, which brought new dimensions to the art of Curt Swan, the penciler with whom Klein was most frequently paired. Together, Swan and Klein defined for years to come the look of Superman and his cast of characters; to this day , most Legion of Super-Heroes aficionados consider Swan and Klein to be the all-time finest Legion art team.\u201d<\/em><\/p>

From there, George went to work at Marvel. There, I learned, that it has been a mystery for some time about who inked Jack Kirby\u2019s first two issue of Fantastic Four. Folks smarter than me have come to the conclusion that it was indeed, George Klein.<\/p>

Longtime Marvel editor Tom Brevoort\u00a0offers up this theory:<\/p>

\u201cI would also conjecture that perhaps the choice of George Klein to ink these early issues\u2013if indeed he was the inker as is generally believed today\u2013was to try to give them more of a super hero feel than Kirby\u2019s monster or romance or western work. Klein at the time was inking Curt Swan on Superman, and you really can\u2019t get a more classic super hero finish than that.\u201d<\/em><\/p>

Klein then became one of Marvel’s most high-profile inkers in the short time before his death. He embellished\u00a0John Buscema\u00a0on a run of\u00a0The Avengers<\/em>;\u00a0Gene Colan\u00a0on issues #46-49 off that penciler’s signature series,\u00a0Daredevil<\/em>; and, in his last assignment,\u00a0Jack Kirby\u00a0on\u00a0Thor<\/em>\u00a0#168\u2013169 (I have a that issue!).\u00a0Among the Silver Age issues he inked were the\u00a0Avengers<\/em>\u00a0stories that introduced the\u00a0Vision,\u00a0Yellowjacket\u00a0(Hank Pym), and the Clint Barton\u00a0Goliath, and another with the marriage of Hank Pym and the\u00a0Wasp, Janet Van Dyne; “Brother, Take My Hand” in\u00a0Daredevil<\/em>\u00a0#47 (Dec. 1968), cited by\u00a0Stan Lee\u00a0as one of his favorites among the comic-book stories he wrote; and the cover and interior of one of\u00a0Barry Windsor-Smith’s first U.S. comic books,\u00a0Daredevil<\/em>\u00a0#51 (April 1969).<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

Astounding right?\u00a0 The stories he did were some incredibly important ones. Ones that have definitely influence what we know as the MCU nowadays.<\/p>

Klein died of\u00a0cirrhosis\u00a0of the\u00a0liver, six months after getting married in 1969.<\/p>

Oh, what could have been. Tom Palmer and Joe Sinnot came to become Marvels other 2 high-profile inkers, and rightfully so, their work was…IS\u2026 incredible. But just imagine what kind of work we could have gotten from George had he continued.<\/p>
