Flipsiders, let me introduce you to a beast. An absolute beast of an artist, Katsuhiro \u014ctomo<\/em>, He is best known as the creator of\u00a0Akira<\/em>, both the\u00a0original 1982 manga series\u00a0and the\u00a01988 animated film adaptation. He was decorated a\u00a0Chevalier<\/em>\u00a0of the French\u00a0Ordre des Arts et des Lettres<\/a>\u00a0in 2005, promoted to\u00a0Officier<\/em>\u00a0of the order in 2014, became the fourth manga artist ever inducted into the American\u00a0Eisner Award Hall of Fame<\/a>\u00a0in 2012,\u00a0and was awarded the\u00a0Purple Medal of Honor\u00a0from the Japanese government in 2013. Otomo later received the\u00a0Winsor McCay Award\u00a0at the\u00a041st Annie Awards\u00a0in 2014 and the 2015\u00a0Grand Prix de la ville d’Angoul\u00eame<\/a>, the first manga artist to receive the award.\u00a0<\/p>

Katsuhiro Otomo was born in\u00a0Tome,\u00a0Miyagi Prefecture\u00a0and grew up in\u00a0Tome District. He said that living in the very rural\u00a0T\u014dhoku region\u00a0left him with nothing to do as a child, so he read a lot of\u00a0manga. As the only boy in a family with older and younger sisters, he enjoyed reading and drawing manga on his own and thought about becoming a manga artist. Limited by his parents to buying one manga book a month, Otomo typically chose\u00a0Kobunsha<\/a>‘s\u00a0Sh\u014dnen<\/em>\u00a0magazine, which included\u00a0Astro Boy<\/em>\u00a0by\u00a0Osamu Tezuka\u00a0and\u00a0Tetsujin 28-go<\/em>\u00a0by\u00a0Mitsuteru Yokoyama, series which he would copy drawing in elementary school. However, he said it was after reading\u00a0Shotaro Ishinomori’s\u00a0How to Draw Manga<\/em>\u00a0that he understood how to draw manga properly and started doing so more seriously.<\/p>

In high school, Otomo developed an interest in movies, that led to his ambition to become an illustrator or film director. At this time, one of his friends introduced him to an editor at\u00a0Futabasha, who, after seeing Otomo’s manga, told the high school student to contact him if he moved to Tokyo after graduating. Otomo did exactly that and began his career as a professional manga artist.<\/p>

On October 4, 1973, Otomo published his first work, a manga adaptation of\u00a0Prosper M\u00e9rim\u00e9e’s short story\u00a0Mateo Falcone<\/em>, titled\u00a0A Gun Report<\/em>.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

In 1979, after writing multiple short-stories for the magazine\u00a0Weekly Manga Action<\/em>, Otomo created his first science-fiction work, titled\u00a0Fireball<\/em>. Although the manga was never completed, it is regarded as a milestone in Otomo’s career as it contained many of the same themes he would explore in his later, more successful manga such as\u00a0D\u014dmu<\/em>. D\u014dmu<\/em>\u00a0began serialization in January 1980 and ran until July 1981. It was not published in book form until 1983, when it won the\u00a0Nihon SF Taisho Award. It also won the 1984\u00a0Seiun Award\u00a0for Best Comic.<\/p>

In a collaboration with writer Toshihiko Yahagi, Otomo illustrated\u00a0Kibun wa m\u014d Sens\u014d<\/em>\u00a0about a fictional war that erupts in the border between China and the Soviet Union. It was published in\u00a0Weekly Manga Action<\/em>\u00a0from 1980 to 1981 and collected into one volume in 1982. It won the 1982 Seiun Award for Best Comic. \u00a038 years later, the two created the one-shot sequel\u00a0Kibun wa m\u014d Sens\u014d 3 (Datta Kamo Shirenai)<\/em>\u00a0for the April 16, 2019 issue of the magazine.\u00a0 <\/sup>Also in 1981, Otomo drew\u00a0A Farewell to Weapons<\/em>\u00a0for the November 16 issue of\u00a0Kodansha’s\u00a0Young Magazine<\/em>. It was later included in the 1990 short story collection\u00a0Kanojo no Omoide…<\/em><\/p>

In 1982, Otomo began what would become his most acclaimed and famous work:\u00a0Akira<\/em>. Kodansha had been asking him to write a series for their new\u00a0Young Magazine<\/em>\u00a0for some time, but he had been busy with other work. From the first meeting with the publisher,\u00a0Akira<\/em>\u00a0was to be only about ten chapters “or something like that,” so Otomo said he was really not expecting it to be a success. In 1990, Otomo did a brief interview with\u00a0MTV\u00a0for a general segment on the Japanese manga scene at the time. Otomo created the one-shot\u00a0Hi no Y\u014djin<\/em>\u00a0about people who put out fires in Japan’s\u00a0Edo period\u00a0for the debut issue of\u00a0Comic Cue<\/em>\u00a0in January 1995.<\/p>

Otomo wrote the 2002 picture book\u00a0Hipira: The Little Vampire<\/em>, which was illustrated by Shinji Kimura.<\/p>

Otomo created the full-color work\u00a0DJ Teck no Morning Attack<\/em>\u00a0for the April 2012 issue of\u00a0Geijutsu Shincho<\/em>.<\/p>

Following the\u00a02011 T\u014dhoku earthquake and tsunami, Otomo, a native of the T\u014dhoku region, designed a\u00a0relief\u00a0that features a boy riding a robot goldfish in rough seas, while flanked by\u00a0F\u016bjin\u00a0and\u00a0Raijin. Intended to capture the region’s will to overcome the natural disaster, it has been located on the first floor of the terminal building at\u00a0Sendai Airport\u00a0since March 2015.<\/p>

In 2019, Kodansha announced that they will be re-releasing Otomo’s entire body of manga since 1971 as part of “The Complete Works Project”. It was noted that some of his manga were edited when initially compiled into book format, and this new project, personally overseen by Otomo, plans to restore them to how they appeared in their original serialization.<\/p>

Otomo was initially reported in 2012 to be working on his first long-form manga since\u00a0Akira<\/em>. Planning to draw the work that is set during Japan’s\u00a0Meiji period\u00a0without assistants, he was initially targeting a younger audience, but said the story had developed more towards an older one. Although planned to begin in fall 2012, Otomo revealed in November of that year that the series had been delayed. In 2018, Otomo said he is working on a full-length work, but the contents are secret. \u00a0<\/p>

At the age of 25, Otomo spent about 5 million yen to make a\u00a016 mm\u00a0live-action film about an hour long. He said that making this private film showed him roughly how to make and direct movies. In 1982, Otomo made his\u00a0anime\u00a0debut, working as character designer for the animated film\u00a0Harmagedon: Genma Wars<\/em>. It was while working on this film that Otomo began to think he could do it by himself.<\/p>

In 1987, Otomo directed an animated work for the first time: a segment, which he also wrote the screenplay and drew animation for, in the anthology feature\u00a0Neo Tokyo<\/em>. He followed this up with two segments in another anthology released that year,\u00a0Robot Carnival<\/em>. In 1988, he directed the\u00a0animated film adaptation\u00a0of his manga\u00a0Akira<\/em>.<\/p>

Otomo was executive producer of 1995’s\u00a0Memories<\/em>, an anthology film based on three of his stories. Additionally, he wrote the script for\u00a0Stink Bomb<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0Cannon Fodder<\/em>, the latter of which he also directed.<\/p>

Otomo has worked extensively with the studio\u00a0Sunrise. In 1998, he directed the\u00a0CG\u00a0short\u00a0Gundam: Mission to the Rise<\/em>\u00a0to celebrate the 20th anniversary of their\u00a0Gundam<\/em>\u00a0franchise. The studio has animated and produced his 2004 feature film\u00a0Steamboy<\/em>, 2006’s\u00a0Freedom Project<\/em>, and 2007’s\u00a0SOS! Tokyo Metro Explorers: The Next<\/em>. The last, is based on Otomo’s 1980 manga\u00a0SOS! Tokyo Metro Explorer<\/em>\u00a0and follows the son of its main characters.<\/p>

Otomo directed the 2006 live-action film\u00a0Mushishi<\/em>, based on\u00a0Yuki Urushibara’s manga of\u00a0the same name.<\/p>

In 2013, Otomo took part in\u00a0Short Peace<\/em>, an anthology consisting of 4 short films; he directed\u00a0Combustible<\/em>, a tragic love story set in the Edo period based on his 1995 manga\u00a0Hi no Y\u014djin<\/em>, while\u00a0Hajime Katoki\u00a0directed\u00a0A Farewell to Weapons<\/em>, depicting a battle in a ruined Tokyo based on Otomo’s 1981 manga of the same name. Combustible<\/em>\u00a0won the Grand Prize in the Animation category of the\u00a0Japan Media Arts Festival\u00a0in 2012 and was shortlisted for the 2013\u00a0Best Animated Short\u00a0at the\u00a085th Academy Awards, but failed to get nominated.<\/p>

Otomo directed the music video for\u00a0Aya Nakano’s 2016 song “Juku-Hatachi”.\u00a0 <\/sup>He is a fan of the singer and previously drew the cover to her 2014 album\u00a0Warui Kuse<\/em>.<\/p>

Reports have suggested that Otomo will be the executive producer of the live-action film adaptation of\u00a0Akira<\/em>. In 2019, he announced that he is writing and directing an animated film adaptation of his 2001 manga\u00a0Orbital Era<\/em>\u00a0with Sunrise.<\/p>

France’s 2016\u00a0Angoul\u00eame International Comics Festival<\/a>\u00a0hosted an exhibition of art created in tribute to Otomo.<\/p>

It was around the 1979 publication of his\u00a0Short Peace<\/em>\u00a0short story collection that Otomo’s work became influential in Japan. Artists influenced by him and his work include\u00a0Hisashi Eguchi,\u00a0Naoki Urasawa,\u00a0Naoki Yamamoto,\u00a0Makoto Aida\u00a0and\u00a0Hiroya Oku. When talking in 1997 about the future of manga, Urasawa opined that “[Osamu] Tezuka created the form that exists today, then\u00a0caricatures\u00a0appeared next, and comics changed again when Katsuhiro Otomo came on the scene. I don’t think there’s any room left for further changes.” Masashi Kishimoto\u00a0cited Otomo as one of his two biggest influences but liked Otomo’s art style the best and imitated it while trying to develop his own.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

Otomo’s manga work also notably influenced a number of\u00a0Japanese video game\u00a0designers by the mid-1980s, including\u00a0Enix’s\u00a0Yuji Horii\u00a0(The Portopia Serial Murder Case<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0Dragon Quest<\/em>),\u00a0Capcom’s\u00a0Noritaka Funamizu\u00a0(Gun.Smoke<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0Hyper Dyne Side Arms<\/em>),\u00a0UPL’s Tsutomu Fujisawa (Ninja-Kid<\/em>),\u00a0Thinking Rabbit’s Hiroyuki Imabayashi (Sokoban<\/em>),\u00a0dB-SOFT’s Naoto Shinada (Volguard<\/em>), Hot-B’s Jun Kuriyama (Psychic City<\/em>), and\u00a0Microcabin’s Masashi Katou (Eiyuu Densetsu Saga<\/em>).<\/p>

Director\u00a0Satoshi Kon, who worked as an assistant to Otomo in both manga and film, cited\u00a0Akira<\/em>\u00a0and especially\u00a0Domu<\/em>\u00a0as influences. American film director\u00a0Rian Johnson\u00a0is a big fan of Otomo and pointed out similarities between how telekinesis is depicted in\u00a0Domu<\/em>\u00a0and its depiction in his film\u00a0Looper<\/em>.<\/p>

In 2017, the book\u00a0Otomo: A Global Tribute to the Mind Behind Akira<\/em>\u00a0was published in Japan, France and the United States, featuring writing and artwork from 80 artists such as\u00a0Masakazu Katsura,\u00a0Taiyo Matsumoto,\u00a0Masamune Shirow,\u00a0Asaf\u00a0and\u00a0Tomer Hanuka, and\u00a0Stan Sakai. From April 8 to May 8, 2021, comic art collector Phillipe Labaune’s self-titled art gallery in New York City held “Good For Health, Bad For Education: A Tribute to Otomo” as its first exhibition.\u00a0Including pieces originally curated by Julien Brugeas for the 2016 Angoul\u00eame International Comics Festival, it featured a total of 29 Otomo-inspired works by international artists such as\u00a0Sara Pichelli,\u00a0Paul Pope,\u00a0Boulet,\u00a0Fran\u00e7ois Boucq,\u00a0Giannis Milonogiannis\u00a0and\u00a0Ian Bertram. Otomo is married to Yoko Otomo. Together they have one child, a son named\u00a0Shohei Otomo, who is also an artist.<\/p>
