Clarence Matthew Baker (December 10, 1921 \u2013 August 11, 1959) was an American comic book artist best known for drawing early comics heroines such as the costumed crimefighter Phantom Lady, and romance comics. Active in the 1940s and 1950s Golden Age of comic books, he is the first known African-American artist to find success in the comic-book industry. He also penciled an early form of graphic novel, St. John Publications’ digest-sized “picture novel” It Rhymes with Lust (1950).<\/p>

\u00a0His influence can be seen in artists such as\u00a0Dave Stevens\u00a0and\u00a0Adam Hughes.<\/p>

Baker was born December 10, 1921, in\u00a0Forsyth County,\u00a0North Carolina. \u00a0At a young age he relocated with his family to\u00a0Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania,\u00a0and after graduating high school in 1940, moved to\u00a0Washington, D.C.\u00a0Prevented by a heart condition from being drafted into the U.S. military during\u00a0World War II, he began studying art at\u00a0Cooper Union, in\u00a0New York City.\u00a0He entered comics through the\u00a0Jerry Iger Studio, one of the 1930s to 1940s “packagers” that provided outsourced comics to publishers entering the new medium.\u00a0Iger recalled that Baker came into his studio with a single sample of a color sketch in his portfolio; he thought the woman was so naturally beautiful that he hired Baker on the spot, as a\u00a0background artist\u00a0before he was given his first scripts.\u00a0Baker’s first confirmed comics work is penciling and inking the women in the 12-page “Sheena, Queen of the Jungle” story in\u00a0Fiction House’s\u00a0Jumbo Comics<\/em>\u00a0#69 (cover-dated\u00a0Nov. 1944), otherwise penciled by Robert Webb and Alex Blum.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

Much of Baker’s work was originally penciled backgrounds as well as female figures for other artists, and most of his work has been inked over, with the\u00a0inker\u00a0credited for his work. He quickly developed a reputation as one of the best\u00a0“Good Girl” artists\u00a0in the business for his attention to detail when drawing women.<\/p>

During this period, known as the\u00a0Golden Age of Comic Books, Baker did work for publishers including Fiction House,\u00a0Fox Comics,\u00a0Quality Comics, and\u00a0St. John Publications.\u00a0In later years, he independently teamed with\u00a0inker\u00a0Jon D’Agostino\u00a0under the\u00a0pseudonym\u00a0Matt Bakerino<\/strong> at\u00a0Charlton Comics.<\/p>

Baker’s friend Frank Giusto and artist\u00a0Lee J. Ames\u00a0have said that Baker was gay.\u00a0Baker’s brother Fred Robinson added of Baker and\u00a0St. John Publications\u00a0publisher\u00a0Archer St. John, “They had a very close relationship. I don’t know exactly what it was.<\/p>

The character Phantom Lady, created by\u00a0Arthur Peddy, had originated in 1941 as a Quality Comics feature supplied by the\u00a0Iger Studio. Cartoonist\u00a0Frank Borth\u00a0later took over the art. After Quality dropped the feature, which had appeared in\u00a0Police Comics<\/em>\u00a0#1-23 (Aug. 1941 \u2013 Oct. 1943), Iger supplied it to\u00a0Fox Comics. Baker redesigned the character into her best-known incarnation. This version (generally but unconfirmable credited to writer\u00a0Ruth Roche) debuted in Fox’s\u00a0Phantom Lady<\/em>\u00a0#13 (August 1947), the premiere issue after taking over the numbering of the canceled comic\u00a0Wotalife<\/em>; the title ran through issue #23 (April 1949). When psychiatrist\u00a0Frederick Wertham\u00a0(A Flipside confirmed P.O.S.) claimed comics had ill effects on a child’s psychological development, he used Baker’s\u00a0Phantom Lady<\/em>\u00a0#17 as a key sample. These criticisms led to the 1954 foundation for the\u00a0Comics Code Authority\u00a0and decades of industry-controlled censorship.<\/p>

His other artwork for comic books includes the light-humor\u00a0military\u00a0title\u00a0Canteen Kate<\/em>, for which Baker drew all 22 installments,\u00a0as well as stories in the suspense\u00a0anthology\u00a0Tales of The Mysterious Traveler<\/em>; the comedic-adventure feature “Sky Girl” in\u00a0Fiction House’s\u00a0Jumbo Comics<\/em>, with originals and later reprints running from #69-139 (November 1944 \u2013 December 1952); the\u00a0jungle\u00a0adventure “Tiger Girl”; “Flamingo”, “South Sea Girl”, “Glory Forbes”, “Kayo Kirby”; and “Risks Unlimited”. Baker illustrated\u00a0Lorna Doone<\/em>\u00a0for\u00a0Classic Comics<\/em>\u00a0in December 1946, his one and only contribution to the well-known series.[16]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0He is the generally credited but unconfirmed artist for Fox’s\u00a0Rulah, Jungle Goddess<\/em>\u00a0#17\u201327 (Aug. 1948 \u2013 June 1949, the title’s complete run after having taken over the numbering of the defunct\u00a0Zoot Comics<\/em>). He also produced\u00a0Flamingo<\/em>\u00a0as a syndicated comic strip from 1952 through 1954. His\u00a0pen names\u00a0include\u00a0Curt Davis<\/strong>. Baker shaped women into classy, realistic beauties, full of character in their own stories as opposed to the ways women were portrayed in other comics of the time.<\/p>

In addition to several\u00a0romance comics\u00a0and other titles for\u00a0St. John Publications, Baker\u00a0penciled\u00a0an early form of\u00a0graphic novel, St. John’s\u00a0digest-sized\u00a0“picture novel”\u00a0It Rhymes with Lust<\/em>\u00a0(1950), with writers\u00a0Arnold Drake\u00a0and\u00a0Leslie Waller, writing under the pseudonym “Drake Waller.”<\/p>

Baker also created or co-created what writer\u00a0John Arcudi\u00a0calls “the first known black hero in American comics.”\u00a0The\u00a0Tarzan-like\u00a0jungle hero Voodah, drawn by Baker and scripted by an unknown writer, debuted in the publisher McCombs’\u00a0Crown Comics<\/em>\u00a0#3 (cover-date Fall 1945, on-sale date Sept. 19, 1945).\u00a0As the\u00a0Grand Comics Database\u00a0states, based on art credits from “The Matt Baker Checklist” by Alberto Becattini and Jim Vadeboncoeur Jr. in\u00a0Matt Baker: The Art of Glamour<\/em>\u00a0(cited under References), “Voodah is colored like a native African in this comic, but after this issue he is colored like a Caucasian.” He additionally is Caucasian on the cover.<\/p>

Later in the decade, Baker freelanced for\u00a0Atlas Comics, the 1950s forerunner of\u00a0Marvel Comics, beginning with a five-page anthological story generally, if unconfirmably, credited to writer-editor\u00a0Stan Lee, in the omnibus title\u00a0Gunsmoke Western<\/em>\u00a0#32 (Dec. 1955). At some point during this period, working through artist\u00a0Vince Colletta’s studio, Baker went on to draw stories for Atlas’\u00a0Western Outlaws<\/em>,\u00a0Quick Trigger Action<\/em>,\u00a0Frontier Western<\/em>, and\u00a0Wild Western<\/em>; more prolifically for the company’s\u00a0romance comics\u00a0Love Romances<\/em>,\u00a0My Own Romance<\/em>, and\u00a0Teen-Age Romance<\/em>; and one story each for the\u00a0supernatural\/science fiction\u00a0anthologies\u00a0Strange Tales<\/em>,\u00a0World of Fantasy<\/em>, and\u00a0Tales to Astonish<\/em>\u00a0(“I Fell to the Center of the Earth!” in issue #2, March 1959). Baker also supplied artwork for the\u00a0Dell Movie Classic<\/em>\u00a0edition of\u00a0King Richard and the Crusaders<\/em>.<\/p>

In the late fifties, he branched out into illustration work, for instance for the 16-page illustrated condensation he did of Howard J. Lewis’ The Complete Guide to Better Bowling (1956, Maco Magazine Corporation) for the General Motors’ Information Rack Service number 1R-58-46\u00a0and the early issues of the St. John detective pulp digest Manhunt\u00a0<\/p>

His last known confirmed work is the six-page “I Gave Up the Man I Love!” in Atlas Comics’\u00a0My Own Romance<\/em>\u00a0#73 (Jan. 1960). His last known work as generally credited but unconfirmed is the first page of the six-page story “Happily Ever After” in Marvel’s\u00a0Love Romances<\/em>\u00a0#90 (Nov. 1960).<\/p>

He died of a heart attack on August 11, 1959 in New York City<\/p>
