Tetsuo Hara<\/strong>\u00a0is best known for co-creating the post-apocalyptic martial arts series\u00a0Fist of the North Star<\/em>\u00a0(1983\u20131988) with writer\u00a0Buronson, which is one of the\u00a0best-selling manga in history\u00a0with over 100 million copies in circulation.<\/p>

Hara had decided to become a manga artist by second and third grade. In middle school he read manga about becoming one, as well as autobiographical manga, and studied\u00a0yonkoma<\/em>\u00a0to improve his sequencing. He then entered the design program at his high school, joined the “manga\u00a0gekiga\u00a0club,” and submitted entries to manga competitions run by magazines. Hara also found inspiration by visiting the workplace of\u00a0Osamu Akimoto, who was an alumnus of his high school.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

When Hara approached Weekly Sh\u014dnen Jump<\/i>\u00a0about becoming a professional manga artist, editor Nobuhiko Horie liked his detailed artwork but noticed his poor story writing skills. Hara began working as an assistant to\u00a0Yoshihiro Takahashi\u00a0and also attended manga classes supervised by\u00a0Kazuo Koike (Lone Wolf and Cub, we\u2019ll get to him. <\/span>\"\ud83d\ude09\"<\/span>)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0He published several\u00a0one-shots\u00a0in 1982; “Mad Fighter” published in\u00a0Fresh Jump<\/i>\u00a0in August, “Crash Hero” published in\u00a0Weekly Sh\u014dnen Jump<\/i>, and the boxing story “Super Challenger”, which won first place at the 33rd\u00a0Fresh Jump<\/i>\u00a0Prize. \u00a0His first serialized work in\u00a0Weekly Sh\u014dnen Jump<\/i>\u00a0was\u00a0Iron Don Quixote<\/i>, a motocross manga which lasted only ten weeks. Horie later claimed that the senior editor was willing to let Hara continue the series, but Horie chose to end it because he was confident the artist could do better. Hara then achieved fame with the publication of\u00a0Fist of the North Star<\/i><\/b>\u00a0in 1983, which he co-created with\u00a0Buronson. Ending in 1988, it spawned a massive franchise and went on to become one of the\u00a0best-selling manga\u00a0in history with over 100 million copies in circulation. His next long-running serial was\u00a0Keiji<\/i>, a period piece published in\u00a0Weekly Sh\u014dnen Jump<\/i>\u00a0from 1990 to 1993 and loosely based on a novel by\u00a0Keiichiro Ryu. It was through\u00a0Kazuhiko Torishima\u00a0that Hara received the offer from\u00a0Capcom\u00a0to create the character designs for the 1993 video game\u00a0Saturday Night Slam Masters<\/i>. In 1998, Hara reunited with Horie, whom he had not worked with since\u00a0Fist of the North Star<\/i>, to create\u00a0K\u014dkenryoku \u014cry\u014d S\u014dsakan Nakab\u014d Rintar\u014d<\/i>. The artist stated that the editor-in-chief at\u00a0Shueisha\u00a0had warned him to stay away from Horie because he held “no status” at the company. Hara was bewildered as to what office politics had to do with creating manga, and he and Horie both left Shueisha after\u00a0K\u014dkenryoku \u014cry\u014d S\u014dsakan Nakab\u014d Rintar\u014d<\/i>\u00a0ended in 2000.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

Despite having such and impressive array of tiles and creations, I have ony ever been able to read his gloriously over-the-top Fist of the North Star. In the last few year Viz Comics<\/a> has began to reprint the whole saga of FotNS in 18 beautiful hardcover editions. Hara, Horie and others then founded the publishing company <\/span>Coamix<\/span><\/a> that same year, and launched the manga magazine\u00a0<\/span>Weekly Comic Bunch<\/i>\u00a0in 2001.\u00a0Hara serialized\u00a0<\/span>Fist of the Blue Sky<\/i>, a\u00a0prequel\u00a0to\u00a0<\/span>Fist of the North Star<\/i>, in\u00a0<\/span>Weekly Comic Bunch<\/i>\u00a0from 2001 until the magazine’s final issue in 2010. Originally published weekly, the manga changed to a semi-regular schedule after Hara was diagnosed with\u00a0keratoconus. Despite previously announcing his intentions to retire after completing\u00a0<\/span>Fist of the Blue Sky<\/i>, Hara went on to create\u00a0<\/span>Ikusa no Ko: The Legend of Nobunaga Oda<\/i>, written by Seibo Kitahara and published in\u00a0<\/span>Monthly Comic Zenon<\/i>\u00a0from 2010 to 2022. An English edition of\u00a0<\/span>Ikusa no Ko<\/i>\u00a0was concurrently published on the official Silent Manga Audition Community website.\u00a0In 2021, Hara said that rather than creating work on his own, he was more interested in working with younger artists to create works as a team and pass on his forty years of experience.<\/span><\/p>

His art has been criticized and being too over-the-top and the anatomy can be a little off-putting combined with the ultra-violence and gore, but I\u2019ve always has a certain fascination with his art. There was just something fun about it. It was a Mad Max fueled martial arts fantasy comic that liked to shock and surprise you.
