TV Show Review – Blue Eye Samurai

Brutal.

Bloody as hell.

And absolutely beautiful.

Blue Eye Samurai is a French-American adult animated action streaming television series created and written by husband and wife team Michael Green and Amber Noizumi, and co-produced and animated by Blue Spirit.

Its premise is pretty simple;

During Japan’s Edo period (17th century), a half-white half-Japanese swordsmaster Mizu quests for vengeance against four white men who illegally remain in Japan during the closing of its borders by the Tokugawa shogunate.

But its execution (pun intended) is not. Mizu cut a swath of blood throughout Japan in they’re quest for vengeance. There are a myriad of back stories, mysteries, and twists that plague and enlighten us as the viewers as the tale is told with breathtakingly rendered 3D animation. It looks as though it was rendered in 3D but also painted in classic Japanese watercolor tradition. It has an all-star cast as the voices as well, including George Takai, Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa, Masi Oka, and Randall Park.  all of which are absolutely wonderful in each roll.  Kenneth Branagh is unrecognizable as the lead Baddie. Ming Na makes a wonderful appearance. The whole of the cast is just amazing.

This is a tale of vengeance, its cost and its rewards. There are no shortcuts taken here as the blood flies through the air and numerous body parts are chopped off regularly. The nudity is also not shied away from either, unlike most animated features.

All-in-all, I cannot recommend this show enough, I am very excited for the second season, whenever it drops. So everybody, go watch it on @Netflix and give it a Thumbs Up!
